Biography of Dr.
Tendhon Amipa-Desam
 |
Dr. Tendhon Amipa-Desam
comes from an old, time-honoured tibetan patrician family and a
dynasty of doctors and lamas, from the regional capital of Sakya
in south Tibet.
His family is related
by marriage to the ruling family of the Sakya dynasty, whose current
head, HH Sakya Trizin, residing in Rajpur (India) is also the highest
spiritual authority of the Sakya tradition, one of the four main
schools of Tibetan Buddhism.
Dr. Tendhon Amipa-Desam
is the first permanent doctor of Classical Tibetan Medicine in Switzerland,
Germany, Austria and France. He graduated summa cum laude from famous
elite acadey for Tibetan Medical Science at Dharamsala (India) after
seven years of study and practical experience. This state university
is the only one in the entire world to be run under the supervision
of the Tibetan government in exile of HH the 14th Dalai Lama.

Dr. Amipa-Desam possesses many
years’ experience in practice. Thanks to the special upbringing and education
he enjoyed, Dr. Amipa is in a position to practice and teach in accordance
with the valuable, old traditions.
He is the twelfth generation

Sakya Amipa was one of the most important doctors of his time.
Following his graduation, Dr. Amipa-Desam worked at various hospitals
run under the supervision of the government in exile. First as an assistant,
then as aconsultant and finally as the senior consultant at the hospitals
in Delhi, Dharmasala, Kulu Manali and Calcutta.
In Calcutta, he was entirely responsible for the construction of this
large, much-used clinic. At the same time, Dr. Amipa-Desam became heavily
involved in research and for many years in pharmacology with the former,
late personal physician to HH the 14th Dalai Lama, Dr. Jamyang Tashi.
He has also worked with the
late personal physician to HH the Dalai Lama Dr. Tenzin Choedrak and other present personal,
physicians as Dr. Lobsang Wangyal, Dr. Kunga Gyurme Ngarongshar and other prominent
professional colleagues. Dr. Amipa-Desam works closely with his western
colleagues and is a member of the Tibetan Doctors’ Association (CTDH)
and the renowned faculty for Tibetan Medical Science (TMAI) both of which
are based in Dharamsala (India), the Chakpori Academy for Tibetan Medicine
(CTMI) in Darjeeling (India) as well as the Swiss Naturopathic Doctors’
